Aimed at honouring the oeuvre of a European documentary film-maker, the award is directed at women directors for their longstanding services to the documentary film genre in Europe. During the nomination and selection process, attention will be paid to those documentary filmmakers who have established themselves in the long term and who have thus made an outstanding contribution to the formal language of the genre and to analysing the social topics of our time. The award is donated by the Sparkasse Dortmund and will be conferred in Dortmund every two years. The first presentation will be made on 17 April 2011. The name of the award-winner 2011 will be announced via presse release shortly before the festival begins. NOW WHAT – Films about getting out of here The Women's Film Festival in Dortmund this year is to present an extensive programme focused on the burning issues of our time. The Dortmund|Cologne International Women's Film Festival today announced the theme of this year's central section: NOW WHAT – Films about getting out of here. Festival director Silke J. Räbiger presented some of the highlights and named some of the guests coming to the six-day festival that now rates as one of the leading women's film festivals in the world. The overriding theme of NOW WHAT is at once the question and the answer. For does anyone really doubt that something must now be done in the face of the worldwide ecological, political and ideological crises? But if the big utopias and manifestos for all fields of society seem to have gone missing, what might alternative plans look like? The central programme section will take in 50 or so current and vintage films made by women, all taking a critical look at the general lack of ideas about our current problems as well as pointing to the interventions and constructive forms of resistance that are possible. From video clip to full-length feature, all movie genres are represented and they include a number of prize-winning works: There Once Was an Island, Between Two Fires, Waste Land and Age of Stupid. In other film sections such as If You Don't Fight Back, Urban Landscapes, Resistance through Art and Off the Map, the films selected tell of environmental destruction and of the activists who are doing something about it, of lost chances and new solutions. They depict tangible resistance by means of artistic commitment and by way of smallscale and large-scale projects. Then there are films that tell of the political in the private. Of individual destinies that, both artistically and emotionally, will make more accessible to us the grand themes of our times. They find revealing images about the development of our cities and about interventions in public space beyond the confines of consumption and commerce. As versatile as the artistic look at the crisis may be, and the media used in that process, there is much unity in the way conviction underpins the different perspectives – the conviction that "Things can't go on like this!" The point is clear: it's time to react and take a stance – in other words: do something! In Dortmund, from 12 to 17 April, we'll be able to find out how … A broad range of other sections and specials will supplement the main programme. For example, in cooperation with the Austrian Tricky Women Film Festival, our Viennese colleagues will be showing the latest animated films dealing with our theme. Meanwhile, our highly popular section Back on the Screen Again will be spotlighting movie treasures from the 1910s and 1920s – some unknown, some much-loved. Supporting programme The Resistance Top 10 – how to protest successfully Talk by Kirsten Brodde Hamburg-based journalist, blogger and environment activist, Dr Kirsten Brodde, will be at the festival in person to present her Top 10 Successful Protest Actions. The acclaimed author of Saubere Sachen (2009) and Protest (2010) was also editor of Greenpeace Germany's magazine for many years. In her latest book, she surveys modern and original ways of resistance and protest as got underway by organisations and private persons from all over the world. In Dortmund, she will be introducing her favourites and giving practical illustrations of how we can achieve small and large goals in the ecological, social and cultural fields. Connected Open Greens [Workshop with Annemie Maes] Action blueprints and recipes for a sustainable city If we really want to reshape our urban way of life on a sustainable and ecological basis, we will have to take tangible measures. But how and where can we create green oases in the concrete jungles of our towns away from large-scale projects? On the window ledge, the balcony or even on the roof? Flemish multimedia artist and activist Annemie Maes will be on hand to present her Connected Open Greens project in which art, regenerative energy technologies, city bees and gardening can be brought together to provide urban biotopes for flora and fauna. In addition, she will be taking festival visitors on a walk though Dortmund. What edible plants might we find there in April? What can you make with dandelions? And will perhaps a few "seed bombs" explode and thus help the city landscape to new stretches of green? Specials 2011 Concert with Ulrike Haage Music-lovers can look forward to an exceptional concert with renowned German jazz pianist, sound artist and radio playwright Ulrike Haage. A unique artist now resident in Berlin, Ms Haage was the first woman to be awarded the German Jazz Prize in 2003 and has come to represent a music that moves outside any established boundaries between pop, art and avant-garde. For her soundtrack to the documentary film Zwiebelfische – Jimmy Ernst, Glückstadt New York (directed by Christian Bau and Arthur Dieckhoff / D 2010), she was awarded the Special Music Prize at the Lübeck Nordic Film Days last year. This and other compositions are available on the CD issued in October 2010 as part of a series entitled Edition Filmmusik – Komponiert in Deutschland. She will be presenting pieces from this CD and from her latest album in:finitum (January 2011) at the domicil jazz club in Dortmund on 15 April 2011. Portrait: The independent-minded Maren Kroymann With Maren Kroymann undoubtedly one of the most versatile and committed persons in the German entertainment industry, this year the festival will be dedicating its actress portrait to her. She was the first and only woman to have had her own satirical series on German TV: Nachtschwester Kroymann, which ran from 1993 to 1997. Since then, Ms Kroymann has made memorable appearances in numerous film and TV productions. And not just on the comedy side – she also took part in Doris Dörrie's recent TV series Klimawechsel about the menopause. In the critically acclaimed cinema film, Verfolgt (Punish Me) as directed by Angelina Maccarone in 2006, Ms Kroyman played a probation officer who enters into a sadomasochist relationship with an under-aged client. A role for which she was won the Best Actress Award of the German Film Critics in 2007. It is this film that Ms Kroymann has chosen to show at Dortmund. Before the screening, in a special workshop, she will also be showing extracts for other films of hers and talking about acting career in general.
